Invoicing shouldn't need a finance department

Bilvo is for the freelancers, consultants and small teams who have been billing clients out of a Word template and hoping for the best.

Most small businesses don’t have an invoicing problem in theory. They have one in practice: the template lives on one person’s laptop, the numbering is whatever came next, and working out who hasn’t paid means opening a spreadsheet next to a bank statement and comparing them by eye.

That works until it doesn’t. An invoice goes out with last client’s name still on it. A payment arrives and nobody notices for three weeks. Someone asks for a receipt and there isn’t one. None of it is catastrophic, and all of it is time that should have gone into the actual work.

The tools that solve this properly tend to be full accounting suites — powerful, and priced and structured for businesses with someone whose job is to use them. If you’re one person invoicing eight clients, that’s an odd fit.

So Bilvo is deliberately narrow. Customers, invoices, payments, receipts. A branded invoice sent in under two minutes, a link your customer can pay on from their phone, and a status that updates itself so you never have to reconcile anything by hand. That’s the whole product.

It’s built to work anywhere from the start — invoice in any currency, take payment through Flutterwave or Paystack — because “we’ll add other countries later’ usually means never.

What we're optimising for

The decisions behind the product

Speed to first invoice

If sending your first invoice takes longer than doing it the old way, nothing else about the product matters.

No manual reconciliation

The system should know an invoice was paid before you do. Anything else is admin we've failed to remove.

Fewer features, done properly

We'd rather do four things you can rely on than twelve you have to check. Scope grows once the core is solid.

Who's behind it

[PLACEHOLDER: a short introduction — who built Bilvo, what you were doing before, and what made you start. Two or three sentences is plenty.]
